The Fox Chapel Garden Club has reinvented itself this holiday season by moving its annual holiday floral fundraiser outdoors, says co-chair Weezie Walter.

Safety first in the era of covid, so the holiday event, traditionally held indoors at the Fox Chapel Golf Club and limited to 250 people, moves to wide-open Allegheny RiverTrail Park in Aspinwall on Dec. 8.

The club’s Glitter and Glow celebration now becomes Glitter, Shiver and Glow.

“It will actually will provide us an opportunity to make it a winter wonderland,” said Walter. Club members will be decorating the park entrance and putting up Christmas trees, she said.

The event from 4-7 p.m. will offer crafts, floral arrangements, wreaths, bundles of greens, bulbs and house plants and more for sale in the open air.

One word of advice, though, organizers say — dress for December.

Food trucks will be available as well as fire pits where people can shake off the chill.

Admission is $10 and proceeds go to support the Garden Club’s mission to further appreciation and knowledge of gardening and to advocate sound environmental stewardship.

Tickets can be purchased by going to GandG2021.ticketleap or by mailing a check to Fox Chapel Garden Club, Box 11320, Fox Chapel, Pa. 15238.

In a sense, the garden club is coming home. The club has had a long relationship with the park as stewards of gardens, Walter said, and it also provided some of the gardens there.

Among the many organizations supported by the garden club are the Allegheny RiverTrail Park, the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania; Mary’s Garden and Kerr Butterfly Garden in the Fox Chapel Area School District, UPMC St. Margaret’s Garden of Hope and the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.
