The Shiners will perform at Aspinwall Riverfront Park on June 30 as part of the free Rock the River concert series.

Music lovers and outdoor enthusiasts should mark their calendars for the second annual Rock the River concert series at Aspinwall Riverfront Park.

Organizers announced Tuesday that they would continue the series this year, kicking off June 30 with a show by The Shiners, a rock-alt band that has toured with the likes of Charlie Daniels and Hank Williams, Jr.

“It’s a great opportunity to enjoy live music in an extraordinary, peaceful setting,” said park board member Dave Short, whose family is the primary funder of the events.

On July 28, the Sons of Margaret will perform, followed on Aug. 25 by local talent, The Compadres.

All concerts are 7 to 9 p.m.

“We tried to focus on bands that do a great job with cover songs in addition to their own music,” Short said.

To help kick-off the special summer event on June 30, Venture Outdoors and Kayak Pittsburgh will offer free kayaking and fishing from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

“This event is a great opportunity to reach residents in the Aspinwall/Fox Chapel area, as well as an chance for folks to try kayaking potentially for the first time,” said Ian Brown, acting director of Venture Outdoors.

“Events like this create natural connections to residents, businesses and natural amenities like our waterways.”

Susan Crookston, the park’s executive director, said a primary part of her mission is to create a community treasure of the 10-acre site. In addition to the concerts, the park offers exercise classes, theater by Stage Right, a walking trail and public dock.
