Foxwall EMS will co-host a program to reiterate the dangers of distracted driving, which causes up to 50 percent of all vehicle accidents, Commander Josh Worth said.

“A vital function of EMS is preventing people from becoming injured or ill in the first place,” he said.

Foxwall will join with Handsfree America and UPMC Prehospital Care Program to host a “Don’t Text and Drive” awareness event at 5 p.m. April 27 at Aspinwall Riverfront Park.

“Approximately 70 Pennsylvanians will lose their lives this year because of distracted driving,” said Worth, head of the Squaw Run Road-based EMS group that serves Fox Chapel and Aspinwall.

“We are proud to promote safe driving practices.”

Residents are invited to hear from UPMC trauma experts and local first responders about the dangers of texting and emailing while behind the wheel. The itinerary includes an emergency vehicle demonstration and pledge-signing.

Handsfree America is a non-profit that aims to spread awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and to advocate for the victims and families of distracted driving accidents.
