Allegheny RiverTrail Park held its second RiverTrail RecDay on Sunday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.. It was a fun-filled, educational celebration of outdoor recreation.
The event was organized in partnership with State Rep. Mandy Steele and featured 27 organizations that tabled, hosted classes, and offered demonstrations throughout the day.
City of Bridges Run Club kicked off the festivities with a group run on the Big Steve Trail at 11 a.m. The park’s car-free trail offers 1.5 miles of uninterrupted gravel and asphalt, perfect for a stress-free, out-and-back 5K.
Exercise opportunities continued with classes led by the Lauri Ann West Community Center. From an Essentrics session to a Family Fitness Circuit, attendees of all ages and skill levels were encouraged to join in.
Following opening remarks by Allegheny RiverTrail Park’s Executive Director, Dee Stathis, and Rep. Mandy Steele, local musician Chet Vincent performed a live acoustic set.
The day’s scheduled programming concluded with a peaceful yoga class hosted by Yoga Flow at 2 p.m. on Bill’s Fishing Dock, offering participants a stunning view of the river as they stretched and unwound.
Food and beverage vendors were stationed throughout the park, keeping guests refreshed and energized. Highlights included wood-fired pizza from Fireside Pizza, Lebanese cuisine from Pita My Shawarma, craft beer from Trace Brewing, and donuts and ice cream from Treat Down the Street.
Kayaking was another major attraction, with free rentals provided by 3 Rivers Outdoor Co. Despite the threat of rain in the days leading up to the event, the weather turned out perfect. By mid-afternoon, tandem kayaks were on a waitlist.
Throughout the day, vendor booths and activities were bustling. Kids swarmed the sculpture playground, while families enjoyed fishing, cornhole, and touring a firetruck brought in by SAVE.
Overall, RiverTrail RecDay was a resounding success, bringing together Pittsburgh-area communities in a lively, family-friendly celebration of the outdoors.
The event also marked the beginning of a summer full of activities at Allegheny RiverTrail Park. The Summer Concert Series kicks off on Friday, June 13, featuring The Commonheart! You can find more summer events at AlleghenyRiverTrailPark.org/summer-at-arp.
