Riverfront Theater Company celebrates Valentine’s Day with the musical revue, “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change,” Feb. 12-15 at Aspinwall Riverfront Park.

The show covers all the bases of love — from first dates to marriage, from children to “the twilight years” — set in a series of vignettes and songs.

The cast features Jenna Hayes, Jim Froehlich, Breanne Smith, Amanda Leight, Jake Smith and Jeff Johnston. David Lu is director and Kevin Milliken is musical director.

Froehlich of Aspinwall, who also serves as president and business manager for the theater company, says the show is an opportunity for him to act and sing on stage again.

A cast of characters

“All of the vignettes are different characters, so it’s a great chance to stretch my legs with personalities ranging from a jaded prison inmate to a senior citizen with one last chance at love,” he says. “In all, I play at least eight different characters and have songs to match about all of them.”

Froehlich said the revue is an adult show that focuses on human connections and some of the absurdities that people encounter in relationships during the course of their lifetimes.

Real-life husband and wife Jake Smith and Breanne Smith of Pittsburgh also are in the cast.

“My wife and I just moved back to the Pittsburgh area after living in Denver,” Jake says. “I was excited to get back on stage after a brief hiatus, and this show was the perfect opportunity at the perfect time. On top of that, I’m lucky enough to get to share the stage with her in our first show back in Pittsburgh.”

Breanne said her various roles in the musical are fun to play.

“I’m given the unique opportunity of playing multiple different characters, but my favorite songs include ‘Always a Bridesmaid’ and ‘Single Man Drought,’” Breanne says.

Jenna Hayes of Friendship also plays a wide range of characters.

“Throughout the course of the show, I become a young woman on a date that she is dreading, a nerd, a babe, a tired wife and an old woman,” she says. “My favorite song is a duet with Jake called ‘A Stud and A Babe.’ We are on a terrible date with each other and end up daydreaming what it would be like to be cool, aka a stud or babe. The choreography is hilarious!”

Jeff Johnston of Pittsburgh jumped into his role when another cast member had to leave the production. His featured musical numbers include “Waiting Trio,” “The Baby Song” and “Why? Cause I’m a Guy.”

He says audiences should love the show because everyone who has ever been in a relationship or knows someone in a relationship can relate to something in it.

“While all of the vignettes are able to be considered stand-alone sketches, the overall message is about dating, love and marriage and situations that will make you laugh, cry and think,” Froehlich says. “In the end it’s a feel-good show and hilarious for sure.”

A four-piece orchestra will perform music for the show. VIP packages are available that include roses, drink tickets and a Valentine’s Day-themed treat.
